International Animal Welfare Conference in Brussels

Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany presented their European Animal Welfare Initiative at the International Animal Welfare Conference and discussed the envisaged goals.

In conjunction with the "Deutscher Tierschutzbund e.V." and the cross-party animal welfare group "Intergroup on the welfare and conservation of animals" of the European Parliament, the European animal welfare umbrella organisation "Eurogroup for Animals" organised an international animal welfare conference in Brussels on 15 March 2016.
The Dutch, Swedish and Flemish Ministers as well as representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission held brief presentations on various animal welfare aspects. The four joint position papers, which were signed at ministerial level, were presented.

As German minister, I am delighted that my Dutch, Danish and Swedish colleagues and I were able to press ahead in this area. We have undertaken to further enhance the coordination of our efforts to improve animal welfare, and that must naturally also be the case at European level. My thanks to the Commission for supporting a European platform on animal welfare that is to take action throughout Europe and that also underlines our obligation to press forward on the important issues together.
Federal Minister Christian Schmidt

The joint statement on the establishment of an EU platform on animal welfare was presented by Germany during the Agriculture Council held on 15 February 2016 and was discussed as a public item. The European Commission attended to this issue and organised a two-day conference with non-governmental organisations, business associations and member states on 23 and 24 February 2016 to determine whether the proposal was widely supported.

Ultimately all representatives of organisations and associations endorsed the establishment of an EU platform on animal welfare. Most member states also expressed a favourable opinion on the platform. In all likelihood, the European Commission will follow up on this matter.
