Attractive rural regions

Rural areas with farms, forests and waters are more than a romantic idyll. Such areas include both economically strong regions and areas marked by high unemployment, rural depopulation and demographic change. Our concern is to make these regions fit to tackle the challenges of the future.

The BMEL is committed to furthering Germany's rural regions. The aim is a sustainable development of rural areas with

  • good quality of life, sufficient basic supplies and efficient infrastructure,
  • a high level of economic and innovative strength and good jobs,
  • upkeep and conservation of cultivated landscapes and natural resources,
  • great recreational value,
  • strong civic involvement.

Some rural areas are particularly affected by the impact of demographic change. In order to make living and working in rural areas attractive, the BMEL, together with the federal states and the EU, is promoting environmental and other services rendered by agriculture and a large number of village renewal projects, networking initiatives and competitions.

BMEL launches national programme entitled "500 Land Initiatives"

Many rural regions in Germany offer good opportunities for the integration of refugees likely to remain in the country in the long term. Solidarity in a village community can give people who had to leave their homeland the courage to make a new start and provide them with social support. In the face of demographic change, integrating these new neighbours also opens up new opportunities for the regions themselves – successful integration is to the benefit of everyone.
