The number of the week: there were 285,000 agricultural holdings in Germany in 2013
Each week the BMEL presents interesting figures on the issues of food and agriculture.
There were 285,000 agricultural holdings in Germany in 2013. This equates to one holding for every 285 inhabitants.
Agricultural land accounts for approximately 18.6 million hectares, or 52 percent, of Germany's territory. That corresponds to an area around twice as large as Portugal. Sixty-nine thousand two hundred agricultural holdings farm fewer than 10 hectares; in contrast, 35,200 holdings have more than 100 hectares.
