GENRES: Information System on Genetic Resources
The information platform GENRES offers current news, technical information and documents on biological diversity and current projects and actors.
In line with the national strategy on agro-biodiversity and the National Work Programmes, the menu items are divided into the areas "Cultivated and wild plants", "Domestic animals and livestock", "Trees and shrubs", "Fish and aquatic animals" and "Microorganisms and invertebrates". Selected current topics such as "Invasive alien species", "Climate change and agro-biodiversity" and "Consumers, food and sustainable consumption" complement the available information.
GENRES has been online since 1995. The Information and Coordination Centre for Biological Diversity (IBV) at the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) developed it as an online information system and has been running it since then. It supports the implementation of the BMEL strategy "Conservation of agro-biodiversity, development and sustainable use of its potentials in agricultural, forestry and fisheries". GENRES also supports the management of the National Work Programmes for plant, animal, forest and aquatic genetic resources and has developed into a monitoring tool for these programmes.
At the global level, GENRES serves as clearing-house mechanism for the agro-biodiversity section according to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). It provides a platform which supports the international collaboration between German institutions, experts and partners in other countries.
