Germany, the land of engineering ingenuity and industry, has at the same time always remained a country with a strong agricultural sector. Despite a high population density, half of the land in Germany is farmed. Around one million people, working in approximately 285,000 agricultural enterprises, produce more than 50 billion Euros’ worth of goods a year.

GFFA is an international conference that focuses on central issues regarding the future of the global agri-food industry. Since 2009, it has taken place on an annual basis in Berlin during the International Green Week. At numerous events, the three-day forum offers representatives from the worlds of politics, business, science and civil society an opportunity to share ideas and agree on topics of agricultural policy relating to the key subject of "food security".

The Berlin Agriculture Ministers‘ Conference is the political highlight of the GFFA. It is the largest meeting of agriculture ministers throughout the world and it has established itself as an important international key event at the beginning of each year.

Ques­tions and An­swers on African Swine Fever (ASF)

African swine fever (ASF) is a severe viral infection which exclusively affects pigs (domestic and feral pigs) and is fatal to them. The disease does not pose a risk to human health. ASF has to-date never occurred in Germany. An incursion of ASF into Germany would have severe implications for the animals as well as for the economy. An incursion into the wild boar population would be critical, since possibilities to control the disease are limited.

Livestock husbandry in Germany has a future. This is made clear by the current Livestock Husbandry Strategy issued by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The strategy maps out the path for livestock husbandry that can face the future and is sustainable, giving farmers the necessary planning security and improving livestock-farming conditions across a broad front.
