Julia Klöckner assumes office as the new Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Julia Klöckner from Rhineland-Palatinate as the new Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture in Berlin today.
Upon assuming office, she said: "I am delighted to assume the position of Minister of Food and Agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture is the 'Ministry of Life'. It addresses day-to-day topics and topics that play a key role in our lives. It deals with food and drink, nature and creation, animal welfare and key services for the population. Our topics affect each and every one of us. I want to focus on consumer health protection, healthy diets, appreciation of food and its producers, the integrity of creation, animal welfare, a modern agricultural sector and the future of the green professions. One demanding challenge will be the further development of the Common Agricultural Policy towards a market-oriented and sustainable agricultural sector that is less bureaucratic and more efficient. I consider it important that we support a nationwide, family-run agriculture in Germany."
Julia Klöckner comes from a wine-growing family in Guldental/Nahe. Between 2009 and 2011 she was Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture. Between 2002 and 2011, the 45-year-old political scientist, theologian and educator was a Member of the German Bundestag for the constituencies of Bad Kreuznach and Birkenfeld. Her work during this time also included serving as a member of the Agricultural Committee. In 2012, she became Chair of the parliamentary group of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the Land parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate. Julia Klöckner is a trained journalist and has worked inter alia, as the editor-in-chief of a wine magazine.
Michael Stübgen, Member of the German Bundestag (MdB), and Hans-Joachim Fuchtel, Member of the German Bundestag (MdB), will be the Parliamentary State Secretaries to the Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture.
Dr Onko Aeikens will remain State Secretary.
