Voluntary work

Around 30 million citizens in Germany are involved in voluntary work. Especially in villages, this voluntary commitment is irreplaceable for making life attractive and jointly mastering diverse challenges. A lively club life and volunteer initiatives are important factors for villages, enhancing their attractiveness and helping prevent depopulation.

The BMEL promotes voluntary service in the countryside – collaborative project launched

In Berlin on 27 November, Federal Minister Julia Klöckner announced the 18 rural districts that were going to participate in the “Paid work strengthens voluntary work” project. The joint project of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the German Association of Rural Districts (DLT – Deutscher Landkreistag) will be launched in January 2020.

Interesting cultural activities and a wide range of possibilities for developing cultural life are important location factors for villages and communities. Like possibilities for buying supplies locally, medical care, educational facilities, care facilities and transport infrastructure, cultural activities are of vital importance for the attractiveness of rural areas as places to live and work in.
