The number of the week: In 2014, Germans spent EUR 7.91 billion on organic foods and beverages, marking an increase of around 4.8 percent over the previous year

Each week the BMEL presents interesting figures on the issues of food and agriculture.

In 2014, Germans spent EUR 7.91 billion on organic foods and beverages, marking an increase of around 4.8 percent over the previous year. This is the result of calculations and estimates of a group of experts from the organic farming market.

Around the world, over 37.5 million hectares of land are now under organic farming. At the end of 2013, 23,271 farms were managing 1,060,699 hectares in accordance with the EU-wide organic farming criteria, representing an increase of 26,344 hectares over 2012. At 6.4%, the share of total agricultural acreage made up by organically farmed land in Germany is above the European average (EU-28: 5.5 percent). Overall, organic farms accounted for 8.2 percent of all farms. The number of processing establishments and importers in the organic sector is also growing steadily: in 2013, there were 35,184 producers, processors, importers and trading enterprises operating in the organic sector. In 2013, to take the organic farming sector forward, EUR 177.3 million in EU, Federal Government and Länder funds were dedicated to the support of organic farmland, processing, marketing, and the Federal Scheme for Organic Farming and Other Forms of Sustainable Agriculture (BÖLN).
