More than one million hectares of organic farmland in Germany

The organic farming sector continued to strengthen its position in 2014

Data analysed has shown that the German organic farming sector was able to continue strengthening its position in the German agricultural and food industry. "We are heading in the right direction," said Federal Agricultural Minister Christian Schmidt.

"However, we don't intend to stop; we want to continue to work together to strengthen the organic farming sector in Germany even further," the Minister said and continued: "The organic farming industry already makes an important contribution to our food! Organic farming is an important pillar of the German agricultural and food industry!" To promote further development, in May Federal Minister Schmidt kicked off the "Organic Farming - Looking Forwards" strategy with industry stakeholders and associations.

A noticeable increase can be observed on farms that both process and import organic produce. With 1020 farms in operation this represented 11.48% more than in the previous year. Of these, 2527 are purely trading enterprises; this represents an increase of 9.78% The number of farms that focus exclusively on processing in the organic farming sector is also approx. 3% higher than last year. In total, there were approx. 8477 farms operating in this sector. In 2014 1,047,633 hectares of land were farmed by 23,398 organic farmers. This is shown by the 2014 annual reports on organic farming submitted by the federal states to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

This showed that the proportion of organic farms represented 8.2% of the total number of agricultural holdings last year and the proportion of the total agricultural farmland was 6.3%. The organic sector in 2014 comprised in total 35,927 producers, processors, importers and trading enterprises. These are all inspected under the strict EU Regulation on Organic Farming rules by private organic control bodies authorised by the state and supervised by the federal states The inspections consist of a compliance check, which is carried out at least once per year, and unannounced, risk-based random checks.
