State Secretary Professor Dr Dr Markus Schick

Professor Schick was born in Mindelheim on 16 October 1963. He is married and has five children. He lives in the rural district of Günzburg in the Free State of Bavaria. Since August 2020, he's been based professionally in Berlin.

Since May 2025, Professor Schick has been Permanent State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity. Before he was appointed Permanent State Secretary, he was head of the Directorate-General for Food Safety and Animal Health at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. He holds a PhD in both human and veterinary medicine, and he is a specialised veterinarian for reproduction and for public veterinary medicine. After working as a scientist and research assistant, he took positions at different levels of the Bavarian veterinary and health administration, i.a. at the ministries for social affairs, the environment and consumer protection, worked for the EU in Brussels for 6 years, was then appointed Vice-President of the Land Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety and later became President of the Land Office of Care. He is a lecturer and honorary professor for public animal disease control at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.
