Argentina - Bilateral Dialogue on Sustainable Agricultural Innovations

The project promotes environmentally friendly innovations, addressing climate change and improving the framework conditions for their dissemination

Agriculture in Argentina

Agricultural products account for 60% of Argentina‘s exports. To ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly production, it is necessary to promote the transformation towards responsible practices. This requires appropriate institutional frameworks, innovative technologies and new management systems, which are essential for the sustainability of the sector. This potential can be boosted by strengthening the innovation ecosystem.

Argentina

With an area of 2,791,820 km² and a population of 47 million inhabitants, Argentina comprises different climate zones: tropical areas in the north-east, subtropical in the north and temperate to cold regions in the south.

These climatic differences result in different ecoregions, ranging from high and semi-deserts to tropical cloud forests, the Chaco, the pampas, savannahs, scrubland and subpolar Magellanic forests, as the country stretches from north to south.

The Project

The project promotes the dissemination of sustainable innovations in collaboration with public and private institutions in the Argentinean agricultural sector. In collaboration with the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina, it aims to improve the institutional framework and foster the innovation ecosystem. The key themes are the transition towards a smarter agriculture through data integration models with a focus on the use and adoption of AgTech, the promotion of bio-inputs for agricultural production and sustainability indicators. It is aimed at innovation leaders and the scientific community.

Objectives

  • Strengthen the institutional and legal framework to promote innovation in Argentina’s agricultural sector
  • Promote a cross-stakeholder innovation ecosystem for sustainable agriculture to intensify the development and diffusion of agricultural technologies
  • Expand the German-Argentine scientific cooperation on innovative agricultural production systems and pilot these innovations in isolated cases

Achievements and results

The project focuses on multi-stakeholder dialogue events, exchange of experts and participation in trade fairs and congresses. A working group developed recommendations for strengthening the national framework for promoting innovation in the Argentinean agricultural sector. In addition, a national ecosystem for sustainable agricultural innovation is being developed, which fosters cross-sectoral exchange and cooperation between institutions on priority topics. Bilateral research cooperation and piloting of innovations is also supported.
