FAO - Fast Partnership

Nutrition and agriculture for sustainable change

FAST

Established at the Twenty-seventh Conference of the Parties (COP 27) held in Egypt in 2022, the Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST) Initiative was launched to improve the quantity and quality of climate finance directed to the transformation of agrifood systems by 2030. After the launch of the Initiative, the COP 27 Presidency called for a FAST Partnership to be established to operationalize the Initiative’s three pillars: access to finance, knowledge and capacity development, and policy support and dialogue. This project was subsequently formulated to support the establishment of the FAST Partnership.

Goal

The goals of the FAST Partnership are to improve the quantity and quality of climate finance contributions towards the transformation of agriculture and food systems, to support adaptation efforts, and to maintain a 1.5-degree pathway while ensuring food and economic security.

Guiding principles of the Partnership

  • Ensure that the food security dimension and the diversity of agrifood systems are reflected in activities.
  • Empower and engage women, youth, Indigenous Peoples, and people in vulnerable situations.
  • Ensure the best available science and innovation are considered, including local knowledge and practices.
  • Promote a holistic vision, contributing to the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Promote peer-to-peer exchanges.
  • Ensure wide and balanced stakeholder engagement, including scientific, financial, and civil society partners alongside governments.
  • Ensure flexible engagement of Member Nations, according to their interests, priorities and needs.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with ongoing global and regional initiatives and partnerships to maximize synergies.

FAST: 3 Pillars

  1. Access to Finance - Enhance country capacities to identify and access climate finance and investment.
  2. Knowledge and Capacity -Develop analyses and voluntary guidelines, and support capacity development across stakeholders.
  3. Policy Support and Dialogue - Ensure agrifood systems are fully embedded and prioritized in climate change policies.
