Livestock play a crucial role in providing nutritional benefits and supporting the livelihoods and resilience of families and communities. However, with the increasing demand for animal products, global concern about the sector’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions grows. To address this, ambitious actions are necessary to make livestock agrifood systems more sustainable and to quantify options for lower greenhouse gas emissions globally. Effective climate action and consumer information require high quality and science-based data. The FAO Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM) presents livestock and emission data in a highly detailed and easily accessible manner to demonstrate how different decisions in livestock production systems impact emissions.

About GLEAM

GLEAM is a modelling framework that simulates the interactions between livestock production activities and the environment. The model can operate at (sub) national, regional, and global scales, and is designed to analyze multiple environmental dimensions of livestock systems. By quantifying production and the use of natural resources in the livestock sector, GLEAM serves as a crucial tool for policymakers. It helps assess the environmental impacts of livestock supply chains and identify adaptation and mitigation.

Impact

The project supports the sustainable transition of livestock systems towards lower greenhouse gas emissions and emission intensity. Through evidence-based and sound assessments of mitigation interventions, the project promotes more efficient and environmentally friendly livestock agrifood systems. This initiative aligns with the FAO’s mission to transform agrifood systems, ensuring better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
