Promotion of Agroforestry
The project promotes the operational capability of the Farmer Training Center (FTC) in Katete and the application of agroforestry practices on smallholder land throughout the district
Agroforestry in Zambia
Zambian national strategy papers recommend and describe agroforestry as a climate-resilient production method. However, at present, agroforestry practices are not widespread among the farming communities. To promote the dissemination of agroforestry production methods, the project has built new training facilities at the FTC, and is strengthening the management skills of staff in the Center, and is also guiding smallholder farmers in the establishment of agroforestry production systems.
Das Projekt
Katete is a densely populated agricultural district that is almost completely deforested. Most of the district is farmed by smallholder farmers. Unsustainable land use practices have led to soil erosion, soil depletion and, declining agricultural yields. The project works directly with extension officers from the Department of Agriculture, as well as selected lead farmers, and thousands of “follower” farmers who apply a variety of promoted agroforestry practices on their land.
Projektziele
- The Katete FTC generates sufficient revenue to sustain agroforestry training services
- Extension services support the dissemination of knowledge on agroforestry practices
- Smallholder farmers adopt agroforestry practices in their fields
- The FTC-based approach to agroforestry promotion is ready for upscaling to the national level
Results and Successes
In the first planting season, six thematic training courses were designed and conducted for the extension officers. This led to hundreds of decentralized training courses carried out by these officers. In total, approximately 3,000 farmers were trained in setting up nurseries and tree planting. Approximately 300,000 seedlings were planted throughout the district in the first planting season. The demand for planting material is very high.
