The Forestry Sector in Vietnam

Vietnam’s forest development strategy aims at the sustainable management of production forests. To implement the strategy, the need for qualified training in the forestry sector is high. The forestry training centre in Dong Ha was established for this purpose by the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences (VAFS) with the support of BMEL in an initial project phase and can offer practice-oriented training for small forest owners as well as state forest enterprises.

The Project

In Phase II, the focus is on consolidating the existing training program, developing environmental education modules as well as on training for forest smallholders. Demonstration areas set up as part of the project enable the practical teaching of sustainable utilisation approaches. The implementation of a business plan, including a marketing plan, provides the frame for achieving the centre’s financial independence. Furthermore, the project implements a study on integrating SFM principles into an existing payments for forest environmental services scheme for forest smallholders.

Project Goals

• The training centre is economically sustainable
• The training concept on sustainable forest management is applied and replicated
• The training centre promotes the integration of sustainable forest management principles into Vietnam’s government financing mechanisms, which facilitates the financing of sustainable management practices

Results and Successes

From 2021 to 2023, the centre’s trainers participated in 16 training courses on topics such as forest economics, carbon monitoring/accreditation and marketing and sales. The Training Centre conducted 12 courses for smallholders, 8 courses for communities and 9 courses for state forest enterprises. Topics included Sustainable Bamboo Harvesting, producing planting material and silviculture techniques.
